Boat Ramp - Oruroa Reserve

A new boat ramp has been put in at Oruroa Reserve with great parking.  We recommend a few things when heading out in your boat:

  • always check out the bar at low tide to see where the channel is – it’s forever changing so be aware of this
  • stick to heading in and out of the bar around 3 hours before and after the high tide to make sure there's enough water on the bar!
  • ensure every person on your boat is wearing a lifejacket and you have at least one method of communication
  • join the Maketu Coastguard!  For an annual membership of $95 you have peace of mind when out on the water.  They have an educational video on how to navigate bar crossings too.  See https://www.maketucoastguard.com

Midway Park: Tennis Courts, Skate ramp, Wetland walk & Bike track

Midway Park is a great park and reserve area for whānau and community to enjoy for sport and recreation.

There is a court area with one tennis net set up permanently, along with small skate ramp features that people are welcome to move round and create their own runs.

There is also a great half pipe skate ramp build by Bjorn of Switchsteez with help from the WBOPDC Community Matching Fund.

The Pukehina Community Hall is a facility suitable for indoor sporting activities, community meetings, markets, and family events such as weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.

The Hall has been out of action for the last four years due to weather tightness issues but with determination, perseverance and a lot of volunteer time from a number of key people on the Committee, (and work with WBOPDC),  repairs have been completed and will be open from the 12th April 2025!  To book for an event please visit the Community Hall page.

The info on this page serves as an archive to the consultation, planning and repair work that took place.

May-Nov 2024:  The building consent has been granted and a lot of repair work has been happening over the last few months!  Stay tuned for info on an opening date and community celebration and connection event in 2025 once COC is obtained.

Background Info to this work below and updates on progress to the side of this page:

April 2021: Community Consultation from WBOPDC - Have Your Say

In April 2021 the community was asked for their thoughts on a targeted rate to help fund the repairs the Community Centre/Hall needs in order to obtain a CPU (Certificate of Public Use).

WBOPDC included this in the 2021 Long Term Plan and a targeted rate has now been adopted.  Please note that this targeted rate will appear on your rates bill in 2022 in two instalments, with the collection time of the $30 targeted rate to only be until the repair work is completed.

  • Pukehina Community Centre: Insurance and maintenance; $6.50

  • Pukehina Hall: $30 for repairs.

  • NB: The naming of the two lines in your rates bill has been raised with Council as they are for the same community asset located at 16 Pukehina Parade.

Once re-opened this venue will be available for hire at very reasonable rates.  We would like to operate an online booking system with a booking contract and small bond, which would go back into management costs and maintenance of the hall, or could be redistributed to other community projects.

We will keep this page updated with progress and plans and if you'd like to help on the project team please get in touch.

Any questions please contact Team Lead Kirsty Garrett on 021 503 693.

Community Notice Board

We have two community noticeboards which are available free of charge for community related notices.

One is located on the Pukehina Community Centre/Hall and the other is a mobile sign popped out on the road opposite The Pukehina Store. Contact pukehina.bra@gmail.com if you’d like to share a notice or event with the community.

We're happy to share!
